Counter service

It is a small place. Most people order at the counter and take it to go, and there are picnic tables under cover in the side yard if you want to sit with it.

Parking on the street

There is free and paid street parking around 31st. Regulars will tell you it is worth the hunt.

Pork, catfish or chicken

The tenderloin is pounded thin, breaded by hand, and fried in a light batter that stays crisp. It comes stacked on a soft bun with a house made hot sauce if you want the heat.

“The tenderloin on it is pounded thin and tender with a very crispy breading, and then there's a mixture of mayonnaise and onion slices that come alive with each bite.”

Since 1951

Kitty's was opened in the early 1950s by Paul Kawakami, a Japanese American who had been confined to a U.S. internment camp out West during the Second World War, and who arrived in Kansas City afterward on a one way bus ticket. He and his wife Kitty ran it together. They retired and sold the place in the 1980s.

Charley Soulivong took it on in 1999, along with the building and the recipes, and has run it with his family ever since. The tenderloins are still cut and breaded by hand, the same way.

Those details come from a Kansas City Star feature that still hangs framed on the wall inside, among the clippings and the business cards.

“We've been coming for years and it's always hot, fresh, made to order. The tenderloin is unbeatable.”

If you're craving a true Kansas City classic, Kitty's Cafe delivers exactly what you want, simple, no-frills, and incredibly satisfying. I tried their famous tenderloin sandwich which is the star of the show: perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and piled high on a soft bun with fresh toppings.

What makes their tenderloin sandwich special is: The bread is very fresh and good with a little bit of a crispy outside. The tenderloin on it is pounded thin and tender with a very crispy breading, and then there's a mixture of mayonnaise and onion slices that come alive with each bite against the salty crispy pork.

Damn good. I enjoyed the pork tenderloin sandwich and the tots! They were both hot and fresh! The batter each cutlet is fried in is light and crispy!
